Old Testament
The prophet Isaiah foretold the coming baptism of the Holy Spirit, saying "... with stammering lips and another tongue will he speak to this people. To whom he said, this is the rest wherewith ye may cause the weary to rest; and this is the refreshing..."
(Isaiah 28: 11-12).
The prophet Joel also spoke of the Holy Spirit, saying "And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions..." (Joel 2:28-29).
New Testament
John the Baptist also confirmed God's will to send the Holy Spirit to His people by saying, "...he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire" (Matthew 3:11).
Speaking in tongues is the initial outward sign of the baptism of the Holy Spirit that we receive. Not only did the disciples begin speaking in tongues on Pentecost (Acts 2:1-4),
but they also saw others received the same gift as they began preaching and teaching to others on their travels.
"...because that on the gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Spirit. For they heard them speak with tongues and magnify God" (Acts 10:45-46). See also Acts 19:6.
Paul said that he considered gift of tongues an important part of his spiritual life, stating "I thank God, I speak with tongues more than ye all" (1 Corinthians 14:18). "I thank God, I speak with tongues more than ye all" (1 Corinthians 14:18).
The Holy Spirit gives ordinary people like the disciples the ability to talk about Jesus with boldness and wisdom. Everywhere the disciples went, people were astonished about these uneducated men spoke.
"And they were not able to resist the wisdom and the spirit by which he spake" (Acts 6:10). See also Acts 1:8 and 4:13.
Jesus taught that those who believe in him will have the ability to perform miracles to help people in need. The Holy Spirit performs these miracles through us.
"And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick and they shall recover" (Mark 16-17-18).
The Holy Spirit helps us when we don't know what to pray by "...making intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered" (Romans 8:26). See also Ephesians 6:18 and Jude 20.
The Holy Spirit helps us to live for God for when we "walk in the spirit, ye shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh" (Galatians 5:16). See also Romans 8:13 and Romans 13:14).
